Informal and small enterprises

The creation of smaller enterprises, and the support of existing enterprises and initiatives in the informal sector, is often a key tool in developing country policies to increase employment and personal incomes. Although this is a very broad topic, and has attracted a considerable amount of research attention, here our goal is to focus on drawing together those resources that have practical relevance for the design and implementation of job- creation and employment-generation programmes.
We have a particular focus on the South African government’s Jobs 4 Growth Programme, which is a key part of the over-arching ASGI-SA programme. Jobs 4 Growth is addressing significant challenges with its ambitious job creation targets, which it aims to achieve through small enterprise creation and support.
